Saturday night at Sharp Nine singer Lois Deloatch gave us a birthday present at her Birthday Bash. I've heard her sing a couple of times before, but last night she performed. A good show, with guests saxist Dave Finucane & trumpeter Jim Ketch adding to Ernest Turner on piano, Kenny Phelps-McKeown on bass, & the still cool Q on drums. Lois is threatening to embark on a renewed final career in singing, I hope.
I summoned the energy to catch most of Elijah Balbed's first set at Beyu, drove down Fayetteville St to MLK & into Zen Poet's second set at Sharp Nine. Though I do want to hear more of Elijah Balbed, it was good use of energy & time to hear the soprano sax (Annalise Stalls), guitar (Russell Favret), bass (Aaron Gross), & drums the always cool Larry Q Draughan) of Zen Poets for the first time. Their sound is unique--led by that soprano sax--& worth rehearing...

I forgot that pianist Elijah Jamal Balbed is playing at the Beyu Friday night at 8 & 10. He's a DC-based musician who is worth checking out on YouTube. He plays well enough that I'm thinking about going there rather than to Zen Poets at Sharp Nine same day/time. If they were closer together I'd go to both!
The choices, the choices! Not quite the agony of Heart of Darkness, but choosing between good jazz perfs is hard... I hardly have room on my print calendar for all the music Friday night:
--Annalise Stalls leading (on her sax) Zen Poets at Sharp Nine 8p. I haven't heard her live, but now that she's moved from Greensboro to Hillsboro & studying at NCCU, I suspect we'll see more of her. --Doug Largent is at Irregardless with his organ trio. --Gregg Gelb leads La Fiesta (with Stephen Anderson) at C Grace 9p. --The G2B Gastropub reignites its weekend jazz with saxist Keenan McKenzie 8p after a jazzless summer. --The Al Strong Quartet does its thing at Cuban Revolution 9:30. Now I admit that my Friday calendar has things like the Hopscotch Fest in Raleigh & the National Folk Fest in Greensboro, but even the five jazz perfs above test my calendar space. I plan to take in Zen Poets &--my major recommendation this week--singer Lois Deloatch at Sharp Nine Saturday at 7 & 9 (yup, two sets). She doesn't have time to perform that often so it's wise to catch up with her. |
