I was jazzed by the performance of the Gregg Gelb Quartet that I'd help set up at Sharp Nine, as he roamed through familiar & unfamiliar tunes from Goodman through Monk to Gregg himself, helped by fine young musicians from Greensboro. Highlights included Dave Brubeck's "Unsquare Dance" & the unfamiliar--to me--Duke's Ellington's
I was jazzed by the party at Beyu thrown by the #1 Local Jazz Fan, Ed Furtick, on Sunday afternoon. He invited all his friends, including local musicians who jammed the entire three hours I was there (& it went on past that). It was just a great gathering...

I've been too busy to update this week, mostly because of managing my OLLI/Duke Guide To Local Jazz class (more on that below). Sorry...
First, I just found out that NCCU jazz prof Robert Trowers is starting a 3-session "Straight No Chaser" monthly jazz listening session at the Stanford Warren Library at 1201 Fayetteville Street in Durham (http://durhamcountylibrary.org/location/warren/). Having listened to Trowers on Wedneday night's WNCU "Eagle Jazz" program, I'm planning to be there... Second, as part of the Guide To Local Jazz class, the Gregg Gelb Quartet is at Sharp Nine at 7 Friday night. Go to www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2074447 for reservations. Third, Juan Alamo combines the marimba (with its beautiful, unique sound) & jazz at Sharp Nine at 8p Saturday night. Pianist Stephen Anderson joins that combo. Fourth, the new season of Doctor Who (on BBC America) competes with Juan Alamo. I plan to tape the good Doctor for Sunday viewing. The Strowd. An unusual name, but a bar that features jazz on Thursday nights 6:30-9:30. I stopped in last night to check it out & had a good talk with owner Michael Rosenbacher. He's started with UNC & NCCU student jazz musicians jamming Thursday nights & will have Al Strong playing 10/24. So, let's give him some support!

AuthorPeter Burke has liked jazz since he was in high school. Having lived & worked in exotic places with & without local jazz scenes, he has also led a Guide To Local Jazz class in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Duke. Archives
