Discovery:​ The NCCU Jazz Studies will have its annual fundraising concert November 5 so put that on your calendar while we wait for more details.

This Week:​ Except for regular weekly gigs, this week is fairly quiet--except for the UNC jazz faculty trio (Stephen Anderson, Jason Foureman, & Dan Davis) playing at Moeser Auditorium Thursday night 7:30p. ​I'll be there because it's always solid jazz.

Friday: It's locavore &​ extravore at the sold-out (again!) Sharp Nine when NYC-based singer Jo Lawry teams with Kate McGarry & Keith Ganz. Lucky to get a ticket, I'll be there​....For those liking anything brassy, the Boom Unit Brass Band is at the Station 9:30p. They are just plain butt-shaking fun.

Saturday:​ Guitarist James Gilmore returns to the Station 2p.​ The weather should be nice enough to open the bar's doors & let the breezes in. I'll be there.

​Yes, it's officially the end of summer with a long weekend coming up, but the LJ home page links can take to a lot of gigs this week.

​Discoveries:

​1. Saturday 8/19 could be titled "The Night Dave Finucane Let It All Hang Out." But, that was only part of it: the Dave Finucane Quartet--with guitarist Scott Sawyer, bassist Jason Foureman, & drummer Kobie Watkins--ignited from their first number & the fire raged through both sets. ​So prepare to make reservations for their return gig 12/9.

​2. Still jazzed after their gig the night before, on Sunday night Sawyer & Foureman played delightful, quiet jazz standards at Chapel Hill's West End Wine Bar (aka Chapel Hill's hidden jazz gem).

This Week: J​​eez, what to expect after last Saturday night? Let's see...

Friday:​ Jim Ketch's Swingtet has probably been the most consistent small group to play around here over the last year. Friday night should be no different as Jim joins some of the best young players hereabouts.

Sunday​ is busier than usual: singer Frankie Alexander at Duke's Nasher Museum brunch 12p; NCCU's annual  free "Give The Drummer Some" concert in B.N. Duke Auditorium 6p; & bassist Jason Foureman plays at the CH West End Wine Bar with pianist Eliana Fishbane 7p. I heard the last two there recently, & they play lovely jazz standards.
