Discoveries:

1. I've added vibraphonist/pianist Christian Tamburr to performer links: Though he makes his living primarily as a pianist (see his website itinerary), he is a vibraphonist! Just ask him. Or, catch him at Sharp Nine 10/19. He also has become part of Shana Tucker's band.

2. Annalisa & Zen Poets sounded great in Arcana's small room Thursday night: Hadn't seen them since their CD release gig. Nice mix of unfamiliar instrumental standards & Annalisa's originals.

3. I somehow missed Cuban Revolution closing: A person in my Guide To Local Jazz class told me. I have to admit it isn't a loss to me.

This Week: Right now it feels like a quiet week--for me--but that means opportunities for Usual Suspects.

Sunday

A nice day to wander from funk jazz at Golden Belt (12-3) to the West End Wine Bar's piano trio (4-6) to whatever music is at Durham's Goorsha (6-8).

Monday

Saxophonist Shaquim Muldrow's quartet celebrates John Coltrane's birthday at Durham's Hayti Cultural Center 7:30p.

Tuesday

Saxophonist Brian Horton's semi-regular residency at Durham's Kingfisher bar (next to the Durham Hotel) 9p. I plan to go check out who's playing with him & whether the bar is keen on jazz.

Wednesday-Friday: I need to catch up on my reading.
Saturday

Extravore--& renowned--jazz violinist Regina Carter @ NCSU's Center Stage 8p. I'll be there. I can't help myself.

Discoveries:

1. Ernest Turner is probably our best truly local pianist: Duh...

2. The Manifold Recording Studio is magnificent: I'd heard of this studio, but Gregg Gelb's La Fiesta Latin Band live recording took me there Tuesday night. Spent the first half with the sound engineer in the sound room, the second half listening live. Both forms of sound were great.

3. Snarky Puppy is marginally jazz: Based on the NCMA concert Saturday night.

This Week: Crazy with choices (especially if you like more than jazz)!

Monday

NCCU grad soul/jazz singer Mavis "Swan" Poole joins the Brian Horton quintet at the Fruit 7:30p. I'll be there.

Wednesday--a night of Usual Suspects!

Jonathan Markow & vocalist Amy Hancock do cabaret @ the Empress Room 7:30p. I'll be there.
Peter Lamb & the Wolves bi-weekly Humble Pie gig 8:30p.
Bassist Rick Bugel group @ C Grace 9p.
Jazz At The Mary Lou 9:30p.

Thursday

Annalise Stalls/Zen Poets @ Arcana 8p. c
Extravore trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire @ Duke's Rubinstein Arts Center 8p.

Friday

Shana Tucker @ the Golden Belt 6p. I'll be there before catching West African music @ Central Park, energy allowing.

Discoveries:

1. Jazz At the Mary Lou is back: The longest-running area jazz jam restarts for the fall semester this Wednesday at 9:30p in the Mary Lou Williams Center, next to the Chapel. It's worth staying up for. Just tak a nice afternoon nap that day.

2. The Empress Room has cornered the market on cabaret-style music: Returning there last Wednesday to hear Amy Hancock sing of the experience of love & loss & Ed Paolantonio & Rick Wolff sensitively accompany her on piano & bass, I will keep saying there isn't anything like this around here. I don't care if I get redundant!

3. I'm putting Durham's Arcana bar on the home page venue list because they've booked jazz on a number of Saturdays (e.g., this week) plus an even more occasional Thursday night.

This Week: After a busy weekend, I'll pick my spots & catch some rest, but don't let that stop you...

Monday

The Ernest Turner Trio plays at the Fruit's local jazz series 7:30p. I'll be there because he's the most progressive pianist we've got.

Tuesday

Guitarist Scott Sawyer joins pianist Alison Weiner at the Eddy Pub in Saxapahaw 7p. If I didn't need rest & hadn't seen Scott Sunday out there, I'd be Eddying.

Wednesday

Another rest night, but check Cary's Downtown Park, the Station, Jazz at the Mary Lou, the Empress Room, & Humble Pie.

Thursday

I'll be at Gregg Gelb's La Fiesta Latin Band recording session (check his website), think about fine vocalist Nishah Dimeo at the O'Henry Hotel in GBO or Brian Horton at C Grace 9p.

Friday

Another rest night (for me), but think about effervescent vocalist Dupresha Townsend at Irregardless 6:30p, or pianist Ariel Pocock solo at the Empress Room 9:30p (or do both!)

Saturday

Keyboardist Mac McLaughlin is at Durham's Arcana 8p. I'm leaning toward that since I've heard of Mac but never heard him.
