Discovery: Don't know about you, but I feel like I'm slowly wrapping myself up in a comfy cocoon of survival routine. Granted, I enjoy tonight's choices of Grewen & Griffin &/or Emmet Cohen (+ being able to return to Orrin Evan's from yesterday. However, part of me wants different, you know?

Yesterday: Pianist Orrin Evans & selected players from his front patio in Philadelphia is more than just good jazz. For three months he's provided that & community. He's got family, friends, & neighbors there, so the atmosphere is better than your average livestream. There are feelings there, something we need (see above).

Today

7p: Grewen & Griffin at: Facebook.com/robert.griffin.7315

7:30p: Emmet Cohen & trio (& guests?) at: Facebook.com/heyemmet

Tomorrow

9p: Guitarist Ben Monder solo at: villagevanguard.com. DON'T KNOW HIM? WHY NOT TAKE A CHANCE?

Beyond: Pending unforeseen gigs, it looks quiet for a couple of days. More as it pops up...

(Re)Discovery: If there isn't much locavore jazz (except Monday's Grewen & Griffin), to hear/see good music, it's "Extravore Time." Plus, you get world-class jazz. E.g., the David Murray/Lafayette Gilchrist sax/piano duo at the Village Vanguard Friday night were tremendous, as was singer Kurt Elling Friday & Saturday night. See more below...

Still Available
  • Kurt Elling's performances--Friday's until 11:59p Monday, Saturday's until 11:59p Tuesday--at:

        noonchorus.com/kurt-elling

  • Saturday night's Murray/Gilchrist duo until 11:59p tonight at:

         villagevanguard.com

Today

4p (& available beyond): Pianist Orrin Evans joined by a new bass/drum pair--on his front patio--at:

          Facebook.com/peeano88

Nevertheless, we need more local musicians to shake off our lethargy & live stream!

Discovery: It was hard to choose last night, but I focused on Kurt Elling because he's my favorite male singer & I couldn't wait to hear him. I'll watch him again tonight, but--because the Village Vanguard gives you 24 hours to watch a pay-per-view gig--then buy a VV ticket for legendary saxist David Murray & not-well-known-enough pianist Lafayette Gilchrist. I'll catch them tomorrow. But, with the plethora of gigs available to you, the choice(s) is (are) yours!

Today

7:30p: Young saxist Immanuel Willkins in the Bird 100 celebration at:

Facebook.com/dizzysclub

8p: Fabled trombonist Steve Turre at:

smoke jazz.com

9p & 24 hrs after: David Murray & Lafayette Gilchrist at:

villagevanguard.com

9p & 72 hrs after: Kurt Elling Quartet at the Green Mill at:

noonchorus.com/kurtelling

Our choices will grow...
