Locavore Jazz: If I have time, I will...

Having some family obligations this week, I'm not sure if I'll have time for live music. But--among the choices on the LJ Home Page & beyond--I'd like to hear Lois Deloatch sing with guitarist Scott Sawyer at the Durham Public Library Tuesday night (at 7:30, I think). Check Scott's website on the Home Page for details.

On Thursday there's a choice: young trumpeter Lynn Grissett at the Beyu at 7p, or pianist Stephen Anderson at C Grace at 9. Hmm, you could even fit in both! For those of you leaning to Raleigh, if Stephen's playing the same tunes he played with bassist Jason Foureman & drummer Dan Davis at Sharp Nine last Friday night, go see them play. The music review I put next on this blog will detail why.

And, on Friday those who like funk jazz can walk between two gigs in Durham if they want to: Stanley Baird at the Beyu at 8 & Al Strong & the Zoocru at Cuban Revolution at 9 Musician Time.

I still haven't decided about Zen Poets at Sharp Nine Saturday at 8. Scott Sawyer thinks enough of the group that he's joining them, which is probably reason enough to go.

Now, since unnamed venues & musicians don't get their monthly schedules up until the first of the month or later, I'll add any late-breaking gigs when I see them. Plus, there's a rumor the Brasa Steakhouse is going to an all-Latin music schedule. When I find out what that means, I pass the info on.

Locavore Jazz: Shout out!!

Knowing that WNCU has been featuring NCCU professors virtually every Wednesday night at 8, & has been doing live broadcasts at both Cuban Revolution & the Blue Note Grill, I am even happier to hear them interviewing local musicians & using their expertise as part of their fundraising drive. I've been itchy to see WNCU do this since I returned home three years ago & got into the local jazz scene.

Recommendation: WNCU, do all this for more than the 20th anniversary & fall fundraising. WNCU & NCCU are at the root of our growing jazz scene & need to put out more vines to our musicians & venues.

Locavore Jazz: Preview more gigs? Why not?

This week builds up to a weekend with too many choices, so check the usual Beyu, Sharp Nine, C Grace, & other venue gigs carefully. One interesting performance is Tuesday at the Carolina Theatre: hot youngish guitarist Julian Lage playing with the folkier Chris Eldredge. Being on the fence about going to that, I really don't know what range of music they will play.

Also, the UNC jazz faculty will play on the front porch of Love House on West Franklin Street in Chapel Hill at 5:30 Thursday afternoon. No, it's not a brothel; it's the Center for the Study of the American South, & it's right next to the UNC President's house.

Now when it comes to Friday night, I will tape the PBS showing featuring Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga, who have duet CD out. Beyond the fact that I was brought up being taught TB was better than Sinatra, I am amazed at how he's (i) preserved his voice & (ii) been open to singing with many young pop singers.

Though I feel badly about not going to see Arturo O'Farrill with the Duke student jazz orchestra Friday night, I must see pianist Stephen Anderson at Sharp Nine since I haven't heard him in a while. I'll share a review of that gig next week.

If I have the energy after Sharp Nine, I may catch the At Strong Quartet at Cuban Revolution. The ASQ usually plays down at C Grace in Raleigh, so I feel I should take advantage of the shorter drive back home. Plus, WNCU's doing its monthly live show from CR then.

Saturday's a little simpler. I will finally catch up with Orquesta Gardel's Latin music (with Eric H on keyboard) at the Pittsboro Fall Street Fair. They play at 11am or so. Then I want to see singer Jua at Irregardless at 9 that night. Yes, there are other good choices at the main local jazz venues.

Looking ahead, I have my eye on singer Kate McGarry & husband guitarist Keith Ganz. They are special together.
