Locavore Jazz: This Week

Late this week. Sorry. At least it focuses me on a good extended weekend...

Thursday: For those interested in the Mint Julep Jazz Band, they're playing for the NC Museum of Art's new exhibit of exotic '30s-40s cars. They also play next Sunday in downtown Chapel Hill's Festival.

Friday: Busy, busy busy:
--The sometimes jazzy progressive guitar duo Parish-Dorji at the Shed 8p
--Charlotte pianist Lovell Bradford--who sold out last time--at Sharp Nine 8p. I'll be there.
--Drummer Brevan Hampden & Latin band Primera (including pianist Eric Hirsh) at C Grace 9p.
--The Al Strong duo at Brasa Brazilian Steak House 6:30. I may have a drink there before Sharp Nine since it's a great place to listen...
--And, the Doubletree Hotel in Raleigh has its first jazz jam this evening.

Saturday: Even busier?
--The UNC student jazz sextet is at the Station in Carrboro at 2p. I plan to be there because they have some fine players in the group.
--Solid guitarist Baron Tymas plays with his quartet of equally fine musicians 8p. I probably will be there, though I'm torn by...
--The extravore pianist Cyrus Chesnut with John Brown at Duke's Baldwin Auditorium 8p.
--Pianist/singer Ariel Pocock at C Grace 9p
--The Shed hosts the Varipop Fest 2p to midnight, including Ernest Turner, D-Town Brass, & Zoocru.
--The Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra (led by Gregg Gelb) hosts extravore guitar legend Larry Coryell at the Temple Theatre.

That enough choices? And, I'll add any other 10/1-2 bookings as October gigs appear on websites.

LJP: Locavore Jazz Peripatesis

Locavore Jazz Peripatesis: a condition in which a person cannot stop going to local jazz performances (see also Extravore Jazz Peripatesis). In common language, binge listening.

My name is Peter Burke, & I am a binge listener. This is my story...

For three weekends in a row I have gone to more than one gig in five of six nights--because I wanted to hear all those performers. Yes, it gave me the related Music Fatigue condition (temporarily) but it was worth it:

--The Jim Ketch Swingtet at Sharp Nine. They're back there 12/9. Do not miss them
--Joey Calderazzo doing his best to play with an out of tune piano at the Beyu. Go see him where the piano is in tune.
--The Scott Sawyer Quartet & the Keith Ganz Quartet, both at Sharp Nine. Except for the constant of Dave Finucane, different lineups, all playing together, so easily that the quality seemed simple.
--Fighting to hear pianist Ernest Turner & saxist Stephen Riley play under the roar of talk at Alley 26 is worth it. For an easier time, go to Sharp Nine 10/21 for an incredible experience.
--Lois Deloatch-Gomes returns after a year's hiatus, selling out two Beyu shows. Can't wait for the next gig...

Extravore Jazz Peripatesis: Saw the edgy, noisy Billy Hart Quartet via Duke Performances last night. Exciting but not moving...

Today through Thursday is a time to check regular gigs, except for Larry Q Draughn's class on rhythm at Sharp Nine at 7p Tuesday. I'll be there.

Friday: I'll first stop at Ruggero's Piano in Raleigh (google it for address) to hear Joey Calderazzo's NC Quartet at 7:30 & then drive to Sharp Nine for singer Lenora Helm's second set. Then I'll go home & rest--feeling guilty I didn't figure out how to hear pianist Andrews Berinson's quartet at C Grace 9p, or guitarist Calvin Edwards at the Beyu.

Saturday: I'm glad I drive a Prius. With great gas mileage it will take me to the Station at 2p in Carrboro for guitarist Scott Sawyer & a bunch of musicians in that jazz series. Later it could take me to guitarist Keith Ganz at Sharp Nine 8p, or Zoocru at C Grace 9p. Spend personal energy, save on gas.

Sunday: I'm going extravore that night: the Billy Hart Quintet at the 21c Hotel in Durham at 7:30 via Duke Performances. But, the Beast is at the Durham Hotel 5:30p & there are too many jazz (& other) performances in Saturday & Sunday's Carrboro Music Festival to mention here. Go to its site & wonder at the choices. Oh, & singer Frankie Alexander sings at Weaver Street/Hillsborough at 11a.
