Discovery: Jim Ketch's last day at UNC is tomorrow, after 43 years there. He's been the jazz program at UNC, starting the annual UNC Jazz Festival, bringing in talented musicians to help his students & people those festivals, being there for & with his student--&, for me, being one of the pillars of local jazz. Over the last nine years I've listened to faculty small group concerts, student groups, & the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra (aka the NCJRO). One highlight for me lately has been his Swingtet, composed of Jim-led younger local musicians, playing at Sharp Nine. Yes another way Jim has brought jazz to us.

Yesterday: In addition to the usual from Grewen & Griffin & from Emmet Cohen's quartet, the most interesting music was from pianist Gerald Clayton, backed by his bassist father John. It's worth trying to catch in its last archive, even with slightly muddy sound, @: livefromourlivingrooms.com (DC Jazz Fest link).

Today: Live From Our Living Rooms starts its "Summit"--workshops, webinars, & live gigs--tomorrow. I'll remind you again tomorrow morning, but it's @: livefromourlivingrooms.com (Summit link).

Today is otherwise quiet, but this afternoon I pick up a t-shirt saying:

No mask?

You make

me sick.

Discovery: The bad news is that vocalist Freddy Cole has died; the good news is that his music will continue. He was the vocalist/pianist you wanted in your favorite piano bar, singing about the vagaries of love. To hear the warmth & beauty of his mostly unfamiliar lyrics, just search "Freddy Cole live" on YouTube. You will be rewarded.

Yesterday

If you like energetic Cuban piano jazz, see Harold Lopez-Nussa @:

Facebook.com/bluenotenyc (in two parts)

Today I will check:

5p: Another online gig by very fine pianist Orrin Evans @:

Facebook.com/dizzysclub

7p: Jason Moran's bassist & native Washingtonian Tarus Mateen @:

livefromourlivingrooms.com (= DC Jazz Fest)

Later this week

7/1-12: Live From Our Living Rooms has its Creative Summit & Fundraiser, with musical workshops with very good musicians, webinars on the business of music, & a set of performances over that time @:

livefromourlivingrooms.com (hit "Summit" link for details)

Stay safe, take care, & binge on music
