Locavore Jazz: This Week Part I

Here's what happening early in the week while I wait for March schedules to emerge:

Tonight/Sunday: Scott Sawyer joins Jason Foureman & Dan Davis at the West End Wine Bar 7p while Brad Maiani's finger heals. I'll be there both for the music & to escape the Oscars.

Monday: Gregg Gelb's Swing Band, one of his many groups, plays for swingy dancing at the Pittsboro Roadhouse.

(Fat)Tuesday: While the NCJRO does its thing at Sharp Nine & Brad Maiani plays soprano sax at Looking Glass, Mardi Gras sparks these: the Decatur Street Beat at Fullsteam Brewery in Durham 8p, my faves the D-Town Brass at Motorco 7:30p, & the Second Line Stompers at Raleigh's Step To Gold Ballroom. Lotsa unusual mid-week choices in addition to the usual suspects...

Don't know yet how Brad M can play a sax when he can't play a guitar. Guess it's because he's tough & wants to play something. Musicians are funny that way.

First things first: Guitarist Scott Sawyer @ Chapel Hill's West End Wine Bar Sunday 7p. Brad Maiani's out this week so bassist Jason Foureman smartly invited Scott, probably with drummer Dan Davis. I'll be there.

These will be Usual Suspects weeknights building up to:

Friday:
--Extravore guitarist Peter Bernstein plays with Greensboro-based bassist Steve Haines, pianist Thomas Linger, & drummer Kassem Williams. Given that mix--& the availability of a Saturday show--it should be good. I'll be there one of those nights.
--But, there are multiple choices this night: the Gregg Gelb Quartet at C Grace; singer Christie Dashiell at Beyu; drummer Atticus Reynolds releasing a CD at the Shed; Ariel Pocock at the Empress Room; Decatur Street at Saladelia; & longtime local pianist Elmer Gibson at Irregardless. A better than average Friday night here...

Saturday: It's pretty much a choice between Bernstein & the Beyu's bluesy guitarist Calvin Edwards, though Irregardless has the intriguingly named Zen Groove Arkestra. Can't beat that name...

Steve Wing Memorial Next Sunday

For people like me who missed the earlier memorial for scientist/pianist Steve Wing, there's another chance on Sunday 2p at the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw. Many local musicians who played with Steve will be there to play in his honor.

It's worth repeating that I only got to hear Steve when he played at a couple of the Station's Saturday afternoon jazz gigs, having missed him back in the day. I'd heard that Steve was fatally ill with cancer, but I never would've guessed that while he was playing--the music gave him the energy to play the music he loved with players he loved & had known for a long time. A man well worth remembering...
