Discoveries/Revelations:

1. It was InShanaT: Shana Tucker & her talented quintet sold out two shows at Sharp Nine Friday night, doing their version of the Cannonball Adderley/Nancy Wilson album from the '70s.  A great show. She's got local August/September gigs so check her performer link on the Home page. You can't go wrong!

2. Pianist Christian Tamburr is really a vibraphonist: He helped Shana Tucker swing in the above gig & done other sideman gigs at S9 recently (in addition to Las Vegas musical director work). If he's as good a vibraphonist as he is a pianist, his 10/19 Sharp Nine gig should be lots of fun.

This Week: One for Usual Suspects & for my choices...

Monday:
  • Grewen & Griffin make local bar jazz magic at Imbibe 7p. I'll be there I have the energy after 3 nights out in a row & 2 more ahead...
Tuesday:
  • The NC Jazz Rep Orchestra (NCJRO) probably sells out Sharp Nine 8p. Haven't been there in too long for a big band blast.
Wednesday:
  • Jonathan Markow plays standard as fine as you could want (probably with chanteuse Amy Hancock) at the Empress Room 7:30p. Can't resist the piano-chanteuse combo!
Saturday:
  • Drummer Thomas Taylor reprises new & recent CD tunes with a group including pianist Ernest Turner & saxist Annalist Stalls & a hip-hop performer at Sharp Nine 8p. Can't go anywhere else that night.

Discoveries: Time to update what I misposted five days ago!

1.
Eugene Chadbourne is one of a kind: Saw him for the first time Sunday night at Durham's Arcana, a complete pleasure listening to his versions of Monk, Ellington, Coleman, & Alice Coltrane, the last on banjo, the former on what looked like a custom electric 12-string. He was aided & abetted by saxophonist Annalise Stalls (aka She Who Keeps Her Light Under A Bushel Basket).

2. I just took the Carrboro Arts Center off the venue list because there's no jazz on their 2019-20 schedule, but I'll note any later scheduled jazz on my blog: However, they do have a great national/international roots/folk lineup!

3. Kate McGarry & Keith Ganz are going on sabbatical: They're moving in September to the SF Bay area for a year. Good for them; less so for us, but change is what happens. We've still got plenty of jazz to go around. I wish them well & will track them on her website & his Facebook.

This Week: Jazz is cool enough to defeat any heat...

Monday
  • George Knott--who's started a quixotic Raleigh mayoral campaign--appears at Raleigh's Neptune's Parlour 8p. Not sure if the Atomic Rhythm All-Starts are with him, but this was on the ARAS Facebook page. Maybe they're his campaign band?
Tuesday
  • Imbibe has its monthly jazz-&-poetry night 7p. Worth a look.
Thursday
  • Al Strong runs the straight-ahead jazz jam at the Durham Hotel 7p. It usually attracts numberous local musicians.
Friday: A busy night!
  • Shana Tucker & Saxsmo Gates honor Sarah Vaughn & Cannonball Adderley at Sharp Nine 6 & 8p. I'll be at the 8p show--which sold out quickly leading to the 6p show, which is also selling quickly. If you want it, get it now!
  • Al Strong's Quartet at Watts & Ward 8p.
  • Brian Horton Quartet at C Grace 9p.
Saturday
  • Guitarist Keith Ganz + pianist Ariel Pocock quartet at Sharp Nine 8p. A good player combo & Keith's next-to-last gig at S9. I'll be there.
  • Pianist & composer Zach Gossett fronts a quintet at Irregardless 9p.
  • La Fiesta Latin band at C Grace 9p.
Sunday
  • Onyx Club Boys provide comfy gypsy jazz in cooler weather at Carrboro's Weaver Street 11a.
