For me jazz choices this week are complicated by other music interests: Malian kora at Duke Wednesday & the many attractions this week at the International Blue Grass Music Association concerts in Raleigh. But, I will persevere. For example:

Gregg Gelb has a "double play" at C Grace Tuesday night: his Swing Band & his Second Line Stompers, in that order.

At Sharp Nine on Friday night at 8p--complementing events you can check on the UNC Jazz Program web site--Jim Ketch brings in the Program's guest artist, alto sax player Dave Pietro, as part of a solid quartet (including pianist Ernest Turner & explosive drummer Kobie Watkins) for the evening.

And, the next night at Sharp Nine guitarist Scott Sawyer & sax player Dave Finucane again demonstrate their fine partnership. You can find an example in the Video Library.

A couple of late recommendations for the evening:

On the Front Porch of the Center for the Study of the American South, on West Franklin St in Chapel Hill (next to the UNC President's house), a UNC student jazz band will play 5:30-7p. They should be good & deserve support.

If you want a preview of an Art of Cool 2015 Festival act, the progressive band Snarky Puppy is at the usually-not-a-jazz-venue Southland. Where doesn't matter; what does.

And, the next night at Southland, the Camel City Collective plays its jazz-inflected mix. No that's not Joe Camel's band. It's a group that included jazz guitarist Scott Sawyer in it
