One minor complaint: the download sounds light on Ernest's piano. However, that also means you feel like Stephen Riley's tenor is in the room with you...
OK, I've already written here that this was the most exciting instrumental performance I've heard at Sharp Nine. Now you can hear it for yourself: Go to www.ernestturner.com &, as the site gives you a clip of the music, scroll down to the link to buy the download. Then you too can hear most of this marvelous night of jazz.

I met a group of hungry people yesterday. Hungry to find out the who/where/when/how of local jazz--via a 15 hour version of my Guide To Local Jazz class at NCSU's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). Most of them listened to jazz regularly on the radio or CD but didn't know that much about who/where/when/how. So we went through the links to Raleigh & Durham venues & to WNCU's weekly calendar & discussed what's what. Given the uptick in visits to this site, I think a number of them are following up.
This repeats what I've found in my longer Duke OLLI course & conversations with people I run into: there are certainly a solid core group of older jazz fans in our area. If you play it--& advertise!--they will come.... One thing that bugs me is when venues change schedules without notice. I went to the Bar Virgile last night expecting pianist/singer Ariel Pocock & bassist James Suter, but no...Unless there's something hiding on Facebook, BV only notes it has music Wednesday (& Thursday) night on Twitter, without specifying who. So I took the wait's word from another night for last night & met with the excuse of worrying about DPAC attendance that night (whatever that meant).
Now I am enough of a sucker for jazz that I'll return to BV again, but only after calling ahead. Second, I may be a bit picky, but the Palace International downstairs performance space sound system sucked last night--when I really wanted to hear Zoocru with Al Strong their guest. I could only hear the band clearly as I got to the top of the exit stairs, not a comfortable place to sit & listen to music. Until I hear the sound's improved there, I'll look for Zoocru at other locations.... |
AuthorPeter Burke has liked jazz since he was in high school. Having lived & worked in exotic places with & without local jazz scenes, he has also led a Guide To Local Jazz class in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Duke. Archives
