Discoveries:
1. Eric Hirsh's wife going into labor routed me to a fine Durham Hotel jazz jam: I get to Arcana & Eric's understandably elsewhere, so I go to the Durham Hotel just as local musicians start showing up. I stayed for two hours. It was as good as a jazz jam should be. The most fun was watching drummer Jeremy "Bean" Clemons (see also below) work with soloists. The man knows how to listen!

2. "Los Itos" made half of my marvelous Saturday night: I knew from watching YouTube clips that percussionist Pedrito Martinez & his buddy Alfredito Rodriguez could be special--& you can too by watching--& they were Saturday evening at NCSU. I'd thought I'd had my highlight for the day until....

3. Ernest Turner played with "Bean" & bassist Kevin Beardsley at Sharp Nine Saturday night. I was ready for a standing ovation after two of the first three numbers (Ernest's "Return of Thanos" & then "Monk's Dream"). That's how good he/they were. Bean is the perfect complement to Ernest: listening, anticipating, accenting, & sometimes driving the bus himself.

This Week: Between Martinez/Rodriguez & Ernest/Bean, I'm worn out. This week could be lighter, but just for me. Ya'll can still track down Usual Suspects &/or try these...

Tuesday:
  • If you want some mellow music, go to Imbibe for a rare Tuesday night gig with vocalist Jennifer Lord & guitarist Rick Keena 7p. I'll be there.
Thursday:
  • The Durham Hotel jazz jam is probably fusion/funk jazz 7p.
Friday:
  • UNCG-based tenor saxist Chad Eby brings in a talented quintet to Sharp Nine 8p. I'll be there.
Saturday:
  • The interesting pairing of marimbist Juan Alamo & vibraphonist Steve Hobbs at Sharp Nine 8p.

Discovery:
Two times two is way more than four: Anyone who saw Kate McGarry & Keith Ganz joined by do-not-miss vocalist Tierney Sutton & guitarist Serge Merlaud at Sharp Nine last Tuesday night knows what that means.

This Week: Except for one extravore performance (see Fri-Sat), it's a week to savor lots of locavore jazz...

Sunday:
  • Tea Cup Gin at Durham's Blue Note Grill 5p.
  • Vocalist Shana Tucker at Saxapahaw's Haw River Ballroom 7p.
  • Bassist Rick Bugel's trio (incl Scott Sawyer & Donovan Cheatham) at Watts & Ward 7p. I may be there.
Monday:
  • Grewen & Griffin at Imbibe 7p. I'll be there.
  • Dance to the Triangle Jazz Orchestra at the Pittboro Road House 7:30p.
Wednesday:
  • Peter Lamb & the Wolves do their bi-weekly thing at Humble Pie 8:30p.
  • Jazz At the Mary Lou continues at Duke 9:30p.
Thursday:
  • Al Strong leads the Durham Hotel jazz jam 7p.
  • Eric Hirsh starts his monthly residency at Durham's underground bar Arcana 8p.
Friday:
  • Peter Lamb & Wolves lighten up the NCMA 5:30p.
  • The interesting pairing of trumpeter Al Strong & pianist Andrew Berinson at Brasa Steakhouse 7p. I may be there.
  • Intriguing young NYC-based pianist Ben Rosenbloom at Sharp Nine 8p. I may be there.
  • The incredible--check them on YouTube!--pairing of percussionist Pedrito Martinez & pianist Alfredo Rodriguez at NCSU's Titmus Theater in Thompson Hall 8p.
Saturday:
  • Martinez & Rodriguez conveniently reappear at 5p (I'll be there) & 8p at NCSU as above.
  • Ernest Turner leads his trio in tunes from his new CD at Sharp Nine 8p. This is a locavore don't miss.

Correction: Reader David Conner pointed out I'd called Shana Tucker--performing at Saxapahaw's Haw River Ballroom this Sunday--Shana Turner. Mea culpa.

Discovery: Vocalist Lenora Helm (Hammonds) told me yesterday at the university bands concert that she's got a few days left on her big band recording Kickstarter. So please go to https://Bit.ly/LenoraBigBand (case sensitive!) to check that out. It includes the chance to go to the live recording 3/26 at the Hayti Heritage Center 7:30p.
