Locavore Jazz: This Week

A couple of unique things this week, one locavore, one extravore--plus all the regular weekly gigs:

Monday: Regular gigs at the Shed, Imbibe, & the Pittsboro Roadhouse.

Tuesday: Regular gigs at the Looking Glass & Alley 26.

Wednesday: Regular gigs at 2nd Wind & Durham's Bar Virgile.

Thursday: Regular gigs at Imbibe & Irregardless--plus the UNC Jazz Faculty playing winning compositions from the 360 Jazz Competition. I'll be there because last year's event with prize-winning compositions from around the world was fascinating.

Friday: Four main choices--with guitarist Baron Tymas at Sharp Nine, Greensboro saxist Chad Eby joined by Louisville-based peer Jacob Duncan at the Shed*, Angela Bingham at Irregardless, & Jo Gore singing over dinner at Durham's Parizade Restaurant.
*: Two saxophonists together could be interesting.

Saturday: Extravore singer Virginia Schenk (from Atlanta?) does Abbey Lincoln at Sharp Nine. I'll be there. Sound to unique to ignore.

Locavore Jazz: This Week

Good morning. The first thing on my mind is the new NCCU Vocal Jazz Ensemble "Take Note" CD. Well worth listening to aside from the fact that it's locavore. Bought it at Sharp Nine Friday night & put it into rotation in my car...Let's see what this week's highlights are:

Today/Sunday: If I didn't have a ticket to the extravore Anat Cohen 5p performance at Durham's 21c Museum Hotel, I'd stop in to pianist Eric Hirsh & bassist Eric Meyer at Durham's West End Wine Bar 4p.

Tuesday: A possible double, with Ernest Turner at the Durham Hotel 6p & the NCJRO at Sharp Nine 8p. Haven't gotten any warnings (yet) of the usual NCJRO sell-out.

Thursday: An interesting performance at a unique location, the Center for the Study of the American South (CSAS) presents UNC student Eric Przedpelski* doing his Bachelor degree recital. He debuted a fine CD the last time he played here, so this is something to look forward to even if you don't know how to pronounce his name (yet)...

*Shuh-pelski--sorta like that dark-haired Duke hoops coach.

Saturday: The busiest night this week, though I'll be at Al Strong's Quintet at Sharp Nine 8p. But I wouldn't mind the idea of seeing Ernest Turner at Greensboro's O Henry Hotel jazz series, or saxist Shaquim Muldrow at Durham's West End Wine Bar 9p.

Some usual suspect locavore, some new locavore, some extravore this week:

Tonight/Sunday: Jazzo-blues singer Adrian Duke at Durham's Blue Note Grill 5p. I'll be there--& you should be too!

Monday-Wednesday: The usual suspects at The Shed, Imbibe, Looking Glass, & 2nd Wind, but...

...I'll be in Greenville listening to Kurt Elling sing with the Branford Marsalis Quartet. Worth the two hour drive!

Thursday: Either the Al Strong group at CG or the Grewen-McKeown Quartet regular gig at Imbibe.

Friday: Too many choices! Though I'm likely to hear the Keith Ganz Quartet at Sharp Nine, ideally I'd catch the Boom Unit Brass Band at The Station 9p, or the Gregg Gelb Quartet at C Grace.

It's worth noting too that DC-based pianist Mark Meadows & the Movement are at The Shed 8p Friday & then solo at the Beyu Saturday 7 & 9p. Don't know how he did that contractually, but it's good listening...

Saturday: Too many choices (reprise)! Check out our local venues for those choices. I'm leaning towards the Shaquim Muldrow Quartet at Durham's West End Wine Bar 9p (perhaps after catching Mark Meadows at Beyu.

Sunday: Fine extravore jazz via Duke Performances: multi-reed player Anat Cohen at the 21c Hotel 5:30 & 7p. I'll be there.
