A Quiet Locavore Jazz Week

At the moment it seems like a quiet week ahead, but certain venues & players--you know who you are--have yet to post their July gigs. So I'll look back for now...

The singer Jua is worth hearing. He combined his own tunes with jazz standards familiar & unfamiliar Saturday night at Sharp Nine/Durham Jazz Workshop, caressing the lyrics with jazzy finesse. His voice took a few songs to warm up, but it was worth the wait. He's got a new CD out (Colors of Life), which both hides the richness of his voice & still makes you want to hear him live. Which can happen 8/9 at Irregardless in Raleigh.

I do recommend a "local" event, the Ocean City Jazz Festival in North Topsail Beach 7/4-5--because, in addition to Cyrus Chesnut & other national performers, it includes local performers Ira Wiggins, John Brown, & Lois Deloatch/Scott Sawyer. It just requires a short trip to the coast!

Locavore Jazz, backward & forward

Christian Scott was excellent Friday night at Beyu, maintaining his energy in a trumpet-sax quartet with bass & drums while displaying his sonic virtuosity. I prefer that to the raucous fusion I heard at Motorco in April. He also explained & demonstrated his New Orleans Indian heritage with the audience as chorus. My only complaint is that he played the same tunes as the first in his second set when we deserved different...

In addition to the usual local gigs, there are highlights this week:

--The Beyu brings in Kurt Elling's former music director, Laurence Hobgood, & singer Ariane Reinhart tonight for what looks like jazz/cabaret, a unique event for Durham. I bought the last tix for the early show, so call now if you want to see the later show.

--The Start of Cool youth concert is at noon Saturday at the Global Scholars Academy, 311 Dowd Street in Durham. Any youth jazz concert is worth attending; it's our next jazz generation!

--Recently arrived singer Jua appears at Sharp Nine Saturday night at 8, celebrating his CD release. Let's see if we have another local singer worth seeing...

Check our venue listings & the WNCU calendar for more since there's lots going on. E.g., for neo-soul jazz lovers Yolanda Rabun is at the Beyu Saturday night while the La Fiesta salsa band is there the night before. Whatever jazz style you like it's here!

Good Locavore Jazz week!

If you--like me--want to hear jazz every night this week, it's all here, mostly through the UNC Summer Jazz Camp faculty concerts Monday-Thursday, starting with Kate McGarry singing with a Stephen Anderson trio at 7p Monday in front of Hill Hall. The next three nights at 7p different faculty quintets will play in 1201 Kenan Hall (next to the Ackland Museum). It all concludes with a same time/place student concert Friday night.

And, that's only one choice that night. As much as I'd like to see four other regular local jazz gigs, I'll see whether the raucous or the mellow Christian Scott appears at the Beyu. He can be fierce & loud or a mellow balladeer. We'll see.

Saturday has the usual range of choices too, but I'll be at Motorco to see Orquesta Gardel for the first time, partly because Eric Hirsh in on piano. But, I need to hear more Latin music....
