Makes this gig even more worthwhile! Discovery: Had fun Friday night watching Chicago-based saxist Ernest Dawkins rehearse his sextet at Northstar Church of the Arts. Unlike me--who only knows what I heard in a performance--Dawkins knew what he wanted to hear. So he worked repeatedly to get the transitions he wanted for the band, the final product sounding just fine to me. I'm sure he heard more than I did....
This Week: Feels normal-er & normal-er... Sunday: Sharp Nine debuts Sunday music.. 4p; Pianist Ryan Hanseler trio in Durham at: Monday: Grewen & Griffin are live at Imbibe 6-9p & Emmet Cohen posts a performance--while if I wasn't taking a break after three gigs in a row, I'd see the Halo Trio lead the jam in CH at: Tuesday: Check Kingfisher's weekly Brian Horton performances, Catalan Tapas & C Grace's jazz jam Wednesday: If Cary had a mask mandate, I'd choose vocalist Angela Bingham at Catalan Tapas, but... Thursday: One obvious choice + two not so... 7p: Katherine Whalen's Jazz Squad takes its Thursday place at Hillsborough's vax-reqd Yonder at: 7p: Piano-bass duo pianist Doug Kobs & Rick Wolff in Holly Springs at: Friday: If I was out tonight, I'd choose between these two... 8p: Public Opinion band w/ vocalist Gracie Jay in Cary at: 8:30p: Beboppin' saxist Sam King in Raleigh at: Saturday: Sharp Nine has good piano-vocal music while guitarist Kevin Van Sant is at the Holly Springs' Pimento Tea Room, but there is another vocalist worth hearing... 5:30p: Vocalist Dupresha Townsend in Raleigh at: Yup, now we have to decide whether to wear a mask... |
