Tuesday night is the last of Ernest Turner's history of jazz piano classes at Sharp Nine 7p. The hurricane has helped me catch something I would have missed.
Wednesday night I will call Durham's Bar Virgile to see if Ariel Pocock & James Suter are playing. Her website says they're appearing every Wednesday night, but in the past the Bar has canceled that gig when there's a big DPAC performance going on. Don't know what the logic is of that, but they're scheduled at 7p.
That's actually the first of three gigs for her this week. Had I been in town, I'd have caught her & James playing Friday at Sharp Nine 8p--the first time I'm aware of her playing with guitarist Keith Ganz. Were I in town I'd be there. She's also at the Shed Saturday 8p.
Thursday night singer Frankie Alexander is at Irregardless at 6:30p.
This is also a good weekend for UNC jazz events. Friday afternoon at 4 in the Kenan Music Building, guest trumpeter Dominick Farinacci joins the UNC student jazz combos. Then at 8 & 10p the UNC Faculty combo features him at the Beyu. If you don't catch either of those, Farinacci & the UNC big band play at Kenan at 8, tickets going to support the jazz program.
Further confusion: Saturday night 8p Sharp Nine has NY-based bassist Iris Orning with an excellent group of local musicians. An interesting extravore-locavore mix.
If I was here this weekend I'd be totally dizzy with choices!
