Coming off a weekend that included a lively set by the Ira Wiggins Quartet in his first Beyu gig in a couple years (keep him coming Beyu!), there's a unique performance tonght/Monday, the usual choices of regular gigs into the weekend, & a quiet number of weekend choices:
Monday/Tonight: The most unique music of the week is Atticus Reynolds's senior recital at UNC's Moeser Auditorium in Hill Hall 7:30p. A talented & ambitious musician, he's composed a suite called "Dim Lights Flicker More Brightly". It doesn't matter what it's called; he's put together a jazz quartet & a string quartet for the recital. I guarantee it won't be like anything else you'll hear this week!
Friday: At Sharp Nine 8p is interesting extravore music. Well, maybe extraterritorial since the Louis Romanos Quartet is based in Athens, Georgia. Check out either of these references to decide about the gig:

Saturday: Though I'll be at Sharp Nine 8p to hear the Chad Eby Quintet (including Ernest Turner on piano) play the music of Wynton & Branford Marsalis, folks in Raleigh have singer Noah Powell at Irregardless with pianist Stephen Anderson & alto saxist John Palowich & Primera Latin Jazz at C Grace, both a 9p. Yes, one could also catch Chad's first set & then go to Raleigh. Makes me wish I lived at the geographical center of local jazz (an RTP office?).
Sunday: Remember, you can take a mother to jazz, either the Durham West End Wine Bar with pianist Noah Sager & bassist Eric Meyer 4p or the Chapel Hill West End Wine Bar with guitarist Brad Maiani 7p. Or both...
