--Stephen Anderson starts his "History of Jazz" class at Sharp Nine Tuesday at 7p. I'll be there.
--Duke Performances has guitarist Rez Abbasi both talking & playing in a jam session with local musicians at the Shed Thursday night at 7p. Getting a fine extravore musician to do that is a credit to Duke Performances, even with their history of pre-concert events.
--Abbasi then plays with his Invocation quintet Friday night at 8p at Duke, including alto saxist Rudresh Mahantappa & pianist Vijay Iyer. A great complement to Thursday night's jam session.
And, if none of those suit your taste or time, there's plenty of regular gigs: Doug Largent at the Looking Glass Tuesday evening; Baron Tymas at the Beyu Thursday night; the Mint Julep (swing) Jazz Band at Beyu Friday night; drummer Larry Q. Draughan channeling Max Roach at Sharp Nine Saturday night; & the busy Al Strong at C Grace that night too.
Too many choices? I'm almost getting used to it...
