Friday: In addition to many other choices I recommend two:
Vocalists Jua Howard & Andrea Claburn at Sharp Nine 8p: They've sung together in the San Francisco area, he's a locally known quantity, her tunes on NCCU the last week have been fine, & they have a solid local quintet backing them (including Al Strong). What's not to lose?
Extravore violinist Scott Tixier at the Beyu 7 & 9p: Well, you'd miss the opportunity to hear an up-and-coming jazz violinist, judging from the You Tubes I've seen. You could catch some of his first set & then zoom over to Sharp Nine, or vice-versa. Don't laugh, I know people who do it & have fine nights (then sleeping late on Sunday, of course).
Saturday: I'd start the day with drummer Atticus Reynolds's trio at the Station 2p, because is just that good. The kid's got two CDs under his belt & has written a fine Latin American jazz suite & gets his bachelor degree at UNC this spring. Catch him while you can....Too many choices that evening. It's a test of your ability to follow venue links & then make a decision. Most venues have something worth hearing Saturday night. Have fun!
Looking to next Sunday the UNC, NCCU, & Duke jazz bands do their Valentine's Day concert 4p at NCCU's BN Duke Auditorium. Always a joyful performance!
