This Week: OK, summer's over psychologically, cooler weather forcing us inside for more live music. E.g., I spent much of last evening listening to Annalise & Aaron play while watching people walk along West Franklin Street in the comfortable temperatures as the sun set, the wise ones stopping to hear the music, whether they joined us or not. That does not happen in our steamy summer...
Friday: Sidecar Social Club at Durham's Blue Not Grill 9p; Greg Gelb & Stephen Anderson at C Grace 9p; a rare Doug Largent Trio gig at Irregardless 6:30p; the Al Strong Trio at Alley 26 9p; & my choice, the NCCU Ladybirds at Sharp Nine 8p. I want to see them because I feel that NCCU female musicians don't get enough opportunities to do their thing compared to male musicians. This group helps remedy that with what should be an enthusiastic performance.
Saturday: The Station in Carrboro gives two jazzy opportunities: pianist Gary Brunotte & percussionist ramon Ortiz go Latin at 2p, while guitarist Scott Sawyer joins bluesman Good Rockin' Sam 6:30p. Both those will tempt me before I see my favorite drummer, Donovan Cheatam, lead his quartet at Sharp Nine 8p.
A good way to move into fall...
