Talk about bang for bucks for jazz fans, the NCCU Jazz Festival has it! It's also one of the least publicized jazz events around here, so here's more:
4/14: Opening jazz jam at the Beyu 7p.
4/15: Fine vocalist Mary Stalling sings with the equally fine NCCU Vocal Jazz Ensemble 8p B.N. Duke Auditorium ($20).
4/16: An incredible set of saxophonists--the eternal Jimmy Heath, the dynamic Gary Bartz, New Orleans-based Donald Harrison, & the group "youngster" Javon Jackson--play with the NCCU Jazz Ensemble ($20, or $35 for Friday-Saturday).
The above concerts are unique & should be on your calendar.
4/18: NCCU jazz combos play at 7p B.N. Duke Auditorium
4/19: As the climax to the annual Vocal Jazz Summit, vocalist/educator Jeri Brown performs with the NCCU Vocal Jazz Ensemble & student vocalists.
4/21: Professor Robert Trowers leads a "Straight No Chaser" jazz listening session at the Stanford Warren Library, 1201 Fayetteville St., at 7p.
These events are worth it too. Like Christmas, they only come once at year!
