1. I won't dance, don't ask me! But...I will listen to swing dance jazz bands, especially when they're as good as Keenan McKenzie's Rifters at Vecino's in Carrboro last Tuesday night.
2. Laura Windley doesn't just swing dance & sing: Once upon a time I researched early jazz in Durham & didn't get very far. Laura's done such at good job at it that the Durham History Museum has an opening reception for just that this Friday at 6p. I'll be there, happy to learn more!
3. If you're a young singer playing with a great group of musicians, what do you do? Get better! That's what Autumn Rainey did Saturday night at Sharp Nine. She's got more to learn but really held her own, making a set of standards her own.
This Week: A short one for sure, with some venues closed. Some things toconsider:
Friday: Chicago saxist Jarrard Harris joins drummer Kobie Watkins & others at Sharp Nine 8p.
Saturday: Kate McGarry & Keith Ganz en duo for a change at Sharp Nine 8p. I'll be there.
