1. The Brandon Mitchell Quartet MJQ Tribute: No one plays like the MJQ any more, but this quartet---Mitchell on vibes, pianist Andrew Berinson, bassist Aaron Gross, drummer Donovan Cheatham, plus tenor saxist Shaquim Muldrow--both played like the MJQ & like themselves. That was beautifully refreshing--& a tribute also to local jazz spirit, Ed Furtick, for facilitating this performance. Thanks to all!
2. This is a week of opportunities: Yes, I'll go to the Calvary United Methodist Church jazz jam tonight, but this week is time for me to do some other things (bluegrass, movies, museums, etc.). That's what I need this week, but it's not gospel. Just check the Usual Suspects & you'll find jazz to meet your needs.
3. Guitarist Brad Maiani has retired: Brad's been a pretty low-key public player while he practices evenings at home. He retired 11/1. We'll now hear more of him.
