Tuesday: This is your day, big band fans! Get a ticket quickly since the NCJRO at Sharp Nine has sold out for the last year. I haven't been known to be a big band fan, but the NCJRO & personal jazz education is helping me appreciate the intricacies of big band sound.
Friday: The most choices tonight: Gary Brunotte & Jim Ketch do a tribute to the cool trumpeter Chet Baker at the Beyu 8 & 10p; young tenor saxist Shaquim Muldrom leads his group at the Shed at 8p; winner of a Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program residency, drummer Michael Ode takes a break from his books & leads a quartet at Sharp Nine at 8; &, at a new venue for jazz (I'll check it out soon), the B-Side Lounge on the back side of Carr Mill in Carrboro has the Doug Largent Trio.
Saturday: Pianist/singer Ariel Pocock is joined by bassist James Suter & thrilling drummer Kobie Watkins at Sharp Nine at 8. As good a singer as Pocock is, her piano playing is just as good. A nifty combination!
