Duke has added to its Ron Brown Dance Troupe/Jason Moran & the Bandwagon dance/jazz performance next weekend: Moran & Brown will talk about their careers at 721 Broad Street in Durham (the American Dance Fest office) Tuesday night 7/17 at 7pm. Since Moran is my favorite pianist & since he is as articulate verbally as musically, I plan to go. I recommend it to anyone who likes listening to personable musicians...

This week starts the avalanche of extravore jazz: Tony Bennett Wednesday at DPAC, Kurt Elling at Duke's Baldwin Auditorium Friday night, a sold-out Tierney Sutton at Sharp Nine Sunday night, etc., etc. I'll catch some of those but can't afford all, knowing that cheaper local jazz is still happening at Sharp Nine, the Beyu, the Shed, C Grace, Unvined, & the Halle Arts Center. So, be distracted by all that internationally famous talent
Jua has a voice made for singing love songs. His "pre-Valentine's" show memories last night at Sharp Nine will last at least until Valentine's Day, & beyond. Here's a guy who could be satisfied doing smooth neo-soul but who went back to school to learn to use all his vocal talents. Last night he used them mainly with the standards that he liked, mixed with a couple of funkier tunes. The highlight was his slow version of the old chesnut "I'm Confessin' ", which is usually played at a bouncy pace; he made us listen to the lyrics. The chesnut became a gourmet snack...
