Secret Keeper, the duo of guitarist Mary Halvorson & bassist Stepan Crump, played at The Shed last night. I can't describe their--as Mary put it--"jazz-influenced" music, only urge you see/hear this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuJMrpFyU7s.

It's good that recent UNC jazz music grad Zach Gossett needed to record compositions for grad school applications! He played them at The Shed last night with a fine, fine group of equally young players: Zach on keyboards; Aaron Gross playing splendid bass solos; Cameron Cook (another recent grad) playing like a mature adult--not a student--on tenor; Atticus Reynolds on drums both keeping time & adding percussive color; & Aaron Pyatt on trumpet & Lance Garrett on baritone sax doing their parts in the whole.
Yes, it's easy to be surprised about young jazz players' skills. Friday: --Tea Cup Gin at Common 414 in Raleigh --Saxist Keenan Mackenzie at G2B (I've really enjoyed his playing with Mint Julep) --Gregg Gelb Quartet at C Grace. Saturday: The Shed cleverly hid the progressive players in Secret Keeper: guitarist Mary Halvorson & bassist Stephan Crump. They will play jazz you won't otherwise hear in this area. Good luck choosing. I'm still stumped.... |
