Parenthetically, I heard trumpeter Nicholas Payton play later that night at Jazz At the Mary Lou at Duke with local musicians. A good change of pace for me that evening.
JD Allen Trio With Dave Douglas: Unlike those who gave the all too familiar hereabouts standing ovation, these have been my thoughts: if you play all the notes at high speed its all sounds the same...speed kills...no matter what ingredients you put in a blender, its sound isn't too musical. And, if you play tunes without a break, those effects are intensified. It works for Washington Go-Go music, but not for me for most of a set. If you like energy & speed in a jazz set, fine. I coulda used some variety.

First...With all the great extravore jazz at Duke Performances this week & next, how do I spotlight locavore jazz? Full disclosure: I've got tickets for JD Allen's trio with my favoritish trumpeter Dave Douglas, for Jason Moran & Tyshawn Sorey (aka the Macarthur Genius Duo), & Gerald Clayton & Ben Wendel. I can't not see those folks! But, there's plenty else to consider below...
Discoveries: On one hand it was great to hear pianist Ryan Hanseler return to the Beyu Friday night to play with John Brown, Lynn Grissett, Brian Miller, & Orlandus Perry. And, Ryan may be moving back to the US in the next six months. On the other hand that piano at the Beyu was out of tune for the second time in the last year of my going there. Unacceptable... How not to go to Duke Performances--if you can resist--& still listen to fine jazz: 1. Follow Ernest Turner...At the Durham Hotel 6p Tuesday night; & as the locavore representative at the free Duke Performances multi-pianist solo/duo performances 1p Saturday & Sunday. 2. Jazz At the Mary Lou jam session: the oldest jam session in the area deserves its due (& extravore trumpeter Nick Payton may show up). 3. Go to the Duke Perfomances jazz sessions to see which local musicians show up: Take a long, late nap & go to Durham Fruit & Produce after the Wednesday & Saturday night 9:30p sets & takes yer chances. 4. Consider all these Saturday options: guitarist James Gilmore at the Station 2p; Durham Jazz Workshop combos at Sharp Nine 4p; Mahalo Jazz & singer Shana Tucker perform at Chapel Hill's Frank Gallery 7:30p; Nick Payton joins the John Brown Big Band at the Carolina Theater 8p for a Duke Cancer Center Benefit; & Al Strong's quintet lights up Irregardless 9p. I'll tackle next week next week... Discoveries: Lots!
1. Ernest Turner joins Duke's "Monk @ 100": Ernest will join four pianists playing all of Monk's compositions Saturday & Sunday 10/21 & 22 at Durham's Fruit & Produce Market 1p. He deserves the attention. 2. Drummer Michael Ode records with & goes on tour with organist Joey DeFrancesco: A great break for a very good drummer. 3. Ernest Turner's Jazz Jam moves to Imbibe in Chapel Hill: Undeterred by the Shed closing, Ernest moves this jam to Thursday 8-10p. 4. What variety at Sharp Nine this weekend! Friday night NYC bassist Iris Ornig treated Burt Bacharach with delightful, unique arrangements that created jazz standards; while DC-based, NC-educated tenor player Brad Linde & his locavore quartet swung us through how Lee Konitz, Wayne Marsh, & Lennie Tristano be-bopped. Each night was different, each marvelous. This Week: Today: The Mint Julep Jazz Band + local musicians = "Ella [Fitzgerald] At The Savoy", a musical & verbal history of Ella's early career. Been there months ago, did that, loved it, recommend it to all at UNC's Kenan Music Building 4p. Tuesday: Monk's birthday at Sharp Nine 7p deserves boldness! I lead a short Q&A, followed by pianist Ernest Turner & excellent tenor player Stephen Riley will do their duo magic. You should not miss this. Thursday/Friday: Pianist Ryan Hanseler returns from the Netherlands with two gigs--Thursday at C Grace 9p with trumpeter Al Strong & Friday at Beyu 7 & 9p. I'll catch him at the latter. Welcome back, Ryan! Saturday: Singer Jo Gore returns to Carrboro's Station 2p, where I'll be too. Don't know about Saturday night. Still studying the many choices on my calendar. Yes, there's lots going on! |
