An Awful Discovery This Morning! Opened IndyWeek to see C Grace closed Saturday night after ten years. Ugly news to have the venue that had live jazz five nights week gone. Ironically I'd been looking forward since last week to note that The Sycamore restaurant in Pittsboro has jazz now every Wednesday night, starting with vocalist Lauren Meehan tonight. That actually mirror a trend I've noticed on the Hot House Jazz website, with local suburban venues adding jazz gigs.
Luckily, there's still Sharp Nine & many other venues to go to....

Discovery: Al Strong's Thursday night performance at Sharp Nine was a gas, to use a very old phrase (the only kind I seem to remember these days). Started a half hour late, went on for two hours over a break, ended somewhere around 10p. Full of good music!

Discoveries: Duke Performances just announced its jazz concerts for the Fall, adding to those of UNC & NCSU:
9/10: Pianist Joey Alexander at Baldwin 9/14: Vocalist Samara Joy at American Tobacco Amphitheater 10/21: Tunisian saxist Yacine Boulares presents "A Night In Tunisia" at Baldwin 10/28-29: Nnenna Freelon leads a tribute to local jazz pioneer Yusuf Salim at Hayti Heritage Center This makes up for the number of offerings at UNC & NCSU this fall. 12/2: Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra with vocalist Diane Reeves at Memorial Hall 10/29: Violinist Regina Carter & pianist Kenny Barron at Stewart Theater NCSU makes up for it in the spring semester: 1/21/23: Guitarist John Pizzarelli at Stewart Theater 2/2/23: The great vocalist Cecile Mclorin Salvant at Stewart Theater Though I greedily want more, the above nicely complements our local jazz... |
