Hold the date: Sunday 11/6. That evening the NCCU Jazz Program hosts "Keep The Vision Alive II", its now annual fund-raiser--this year featuring pianist Ellis Marsalis & saxophonist Marcus Anderson, at the Carolina Theatre. It's a great combo, the doyen of the Marsalis family & an NCCU grad smooth jazz star, plus the NCCU big band & its budding performers.

Ever since I asked the NCCU vocal jazz singers in 2015 how much non-school performing they did--& discovered that it wasn't much--I've been enthused by the times I do hear some of those singers & others. NCCU vocal jazz professor Lenora Zenzalai Helms joined three of her students at a benefit at the Beyu that was just fine, & now I've experienced singers twice at The Shed.
Wednesday night it was Autumn Riley with tenor player Shaquim Muldrow's quarter. Unadvertised--my only complaint about those gigs. It has been a pleasant surprise, but I can live without those surprises. E.g., tonight Sharp Nine offers singer Emma Lanford & the New Edition, a group of the award-winning Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble. I will be there, continuing to promote jazz singers joining/leading the many fine local instrumentalists... 1. Durham Hotel third Tuesdays 6-9: The Art of Cool Project has combined with the Durham Hotel for jazz performances every third Tuesday, starting with the Al Strong Trio 8/16, on the hotel rooftop.
2. Joey Calderazzo/Eric Revis at the Beyu: This piano/bass half of the Branford Marsalis Quartet should be interesting since they've played together in the BMQ for 15+ years. They play at the Beyu Friday 9/9 at 8 & 10p. 3 "Give The Drummer Some" @ NCCU 8/28: For the last three years drummer/professor Thomas Taylor has organized semester-starting music workshops, a silent auction, & a concert featuring NCCU grads & other local & outside players. This year GTDS honors Durham-born drummer Grady Tate & should be as much fun as the last three events. For details go to: https://www.facebook.com/nccugivethedrummersome/. |
