Discovery: If you want to catch Al Strong with minimal crowd noise at Raleigh's C Grace, do it on a Thursday night as I did last night. Plus, as he performed Al started in a trio, added a pianist, added a trombonist, subbed a pianist, added a vocalist, added two alto players, & subbed a bassist. Al does an extraordinary job of getting folks involved...

Discoveries:
1. If you want to hear well-crafted beautifully played straight-ahead jazz by Phil Allen's Octet at Sharp Nine yesterday afternoon, go to: 2. NYC-based pianist Ethan Iverson, who did the Bud Powell performance a few weeks ago there, was so impressed by Sharp Nine that he's booked a gig 7/15/22 there, using two local musicians. 3. The UNC Summer Jazz Camp starts next Monday with its usual free nightly faculty concerts. I'll note this later this week, but here's the link to preview what to sample: Remember, jazz venues are 20 degrees cooler inside! Discovery: The energetic percussionist Juan Alamo was both a joy & fun to watch at Sharp Nine last night. He brought Marimjazzia to the Sharp Nine for his first audience in more than two years (& it was his birthday), so he was so ready to play he was hardly ready to speak rather than just play. I love that kind of enthusiasm!
