Discovery: I'll say this, the Cave's Monday night jazz jam, led by the Halo Trio, draws a crowd, not your average jazz fans, but enthusiastic nevertheless. Makes it the Best Dive Bar Jazz Night in Chapel Hill.

Discoveries:
1. The Jim Ketch Swingtet paid tribute to saxist to Shaquim Muldrow, who's moving to NYC (but who has a 7/1/22 Sharp Nine gig too). Link to fine music: 2. Though pianist Ethan Iverson's magnificent "Bud Powell In the 21st Century" wasn't live-streamed by Sharp Nine, you can find the original recording at: This Week: Details of my plans below, but I'm also catching pianist Emmet Cohen in Charlotte at the Blumenthal Center, mainly because his weekly livestream has been part of my pandemic sanity. Monday: I'll finally get to the Cave's 9p jazz jam in Chapel Hill, to see who's playing these days... Tuesday-Wednesday: Play by ear, seeing what's happening online... Thursday: Old-time music at the Blue Note Grill. No, not jazz, but still within my range... Friday: Vocalist Shana Tucker will bring joy to listeners at Sharp Nine in Durham 8p at:Saturday: If I wasn't in Charlotte, I'd hear trumpeter Eric Williams at Sharp Nine 8p, because his last gig there was marvelous: Sunday: The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble performs in Raleigh at NCSU's Stewart Theater 3p: A quieter week than lately but still with good choices... Discoveries:
1. The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble (TYJE) won three awards at the Essentially Ellington Competition: best sax/brass/rhythm sections. Good for them! 2. The Al Strong Quintet put on a fine show with an seriously low attendance at the Arts Center in Carrboro last night (including the delightful tap dancer with jazz rhythm, Caroline Brody). I'm terribly disappointed at the attendance, not caring it was graduations weekend & a rainy night. Not sure whether it's an indicator of how slim the jazz audience is, how drawn the audience is to Sharp Nine, &/or how little the Arts Center audience cares for jazz now. This Week: The Usual Monday-Thursday suspects yield to Good Friday-Saturday choices. One cranky note: neither the Catalan Tapas nor the Niche Wine Lounge are good at listing who's playing... Monday: Time for me to catch up with the Cave jazz jam with the Halo Trio 9p. Friday: It's Jim Ketch's Swingtet living up to its name at Sharp Nine 8p, or a Gregg Gelb jazz group at C Grace 8:30p. Saturday: Though I'll hit Sharp Nine, plenty else going on: 8p: Brad Linde's big band--with pianist Ethan Iverson (of Monkfest '17 fame)--doing Bud Powell at Sharp 9:8p: Pianist Ryan Hanseler & fine vocalist Gracie Jay in Clayton at:8p: Vocalist Angela Bingham & pianist Frank Longino light up Holly Springs at:8:30p: Trumpeter Al Strong brings a crowd in Raleigh at: That Saturday is about as good as it gets here! |
