Among/beyond the regular gigs this week--which you should check out--these tempt me to see:
--The NCJRO at Sharp Nine Tuesday at 8. They've been selling out; get tix quickly if interested. --Pianist Stephen Anderson & saxophonist I haven't yet heard Stephen Riley but want to at Brasa at 6:30 Friday. --Guitarists Scott Sawyer & Keith Ganz again at Sharp Nine at 8 Saturday. Ernest Turner gave us a productive work-in-progress last night: his currently titled "My Americana" CD-to-be covering numerous African-American composers & musicians. This evening included Monk, Duke Ellington, Thomas Dorsey, W.C. Handy, & Turner's dedication to his young son, "Malcom Says".
But, it's the way Turner interprets those composers that matters. He typically eased his way into each melody solo improvising on it, almost teasing the audience into guessing which tune it is. E.g., "Bemsha Swing" went through an impressionist stage before its distinctive lilt was apparent. That approach made me think of him as an exploratory pianist, teasing out sounds that only we can hear until he plays them. |
