And, now that C Grace & the Beyu Caffe have posted their April schedules, there are even more choices this weekend:
- On Friday 4/4 the swing band Peter Lamb & the Wolves are at the Beyu at 8 & 10; the Gregg Gelb Quartet is at C Grace at 9.
Enjoy...

I just added the Peak City Grill in Apex to Venue links since they have jazz Tuesdays, Fridays, & Saturdays, with the last's schedule set through December. A good investment...

If it's true there are too many choices these days, it may be good for me to be away next week. I'll leave it up to you to choose among these:
Sunday 4/6: From 1-6p on the Carolina Theater plaza, Al Strong will lead a jazz jam as part of the Fullframe Film Fest. Music in the sunshine will be a nice change of pace for those who've been sitting in the dark Monday 4/7: The Kidznotes Jazz Combo (another Al Strong gig) will play with the Carolina Charanga Orchestra at 7:30 in Hill Hall on the UNC campus--an opportunity to support young local players. Tuesday 4/8: The 2nd Line Stompers trad jazz band is at C Grace in Raleigh at 9p. Or, if you need your Branford Marsalis Quartet ya-yas (like I do), they're at UNC-Wilmington at 8p. It's possible to drive down, hear the music, & drive back in one long evening. Wednesday 4/9: Pianist Ryan Hanseler is at C Grace 9p. Friday 4/11: TOO MANY CHOICES? Pianist/vocalist Diane Schuur appears with the Duke Jazz Ensemble at 8p in Baldwin Auditorium. Pianist Ryan Hanseler leads his Quintet is at the Beyu at 8 & 10p. Trumpeter Jim Ketch's Quinrtet--including guest bassist Ben Allison--is at the Sharp Nine/Durham Jazz Workshop at 8. Trumpeter Al Strong's Duo is at Ally 26 in Durham at 9. Remember, you could catch either the Diane Schuur concert or Jim Ketch's first set, catch Ryan Hanseler's second set, & finish with Al Strong at Alley 26. Saturday 4/12: Guitarist Scott Sawyer & saxophonist Dave Finucane hook up at Sharp 9 at 8p. Al Strong is at C Grace at 9p. And, some non-local music played locally: percussionist Pedro Martinez is at the NCSU Center Stage in the Talley Student Center Ballroom at 8p. Is that enough? I missed much local jazz last week. Ah well, I compensated by seeing the NC Jazz Rep Orchestra last night. Very refreshing to hear all the layers & accents a big band adds to a melody...
This week or so is quieter than last week/weekend but still has plenty to offer: Thursday 4/17: Al Strong is at C Grace 9p. Friday 4/18: The Beast is at the NC Museum of Art 5:30pm; the Mint Julep Jazz Band (get on your swing dancing shoes) is at the G2B Gastropub 8pm; Brian Horton is at C Grace 9pm. It's one of those nights to do a jazz-crawl! Saturday 4/19: Ira Wiggins is at the Beyu 8pm; alto player Brian Miller is at C Grace 9pm. A simpler jazz-crawl is possible. Remember, the Art of Cool Festival is Friday-Saturday 4/25-26, at multiple locations. Check out their website! |
