Monday: Having built up to it all semester, the NCCU student combos perform at 7p at BN Duke Auditorium. A chance to see the depth of student talent there.
Tuesday: After the all-day Vocal Jazz Summit workshops/demonstrations/talks, guest vocal educator Jeri Brown leads Summit performances at BN Duke at 7p.
Thursday: At the Stanford L. Warren Library at 1201 Fayetteville St, Professor & trombonist Robert Trowers holds a "Straight No Chaser" jazz listening session for the public at 7p.
Of course there's plenty else this week!
Tuesday: Stephen Anderson concludes his History Of Jazz class at Sharp Nine at 7p with Miles Davis & beyond.
Thursday: The UNC Jazz Faculty plays at the Center for the Study of the American South (CSAS) at 5:30p; while guitarist Russell Favret leads a trio for the first time I've seen at the Beyu at 7p. With the above NCCU listening session, there are possible combinations this night.
Friday: While trumpeter Lynn Grissett performs with pianist Ernest Turner at Sharp Nine at 8, the Mint Julep Jazz Band may or may not be playing at G2B (MJJB site says no, G2B's says yes). I opt for S9.
Saturday: Greensboro-based pianist Thomas Linger leads a quintet at Sharp Nine. Worth seeing.
Sunday: The duo of singer/pianist Ariel Pocock & bassist James Suter play at the outdoor Honeysuckle Tea House in rural Chapel Hill at 1p; while saxist Jim Snidero, accompanied by pianist Ernest Turner, play at Sharp Nine at 7p. Hmm, Tea House at 1, take a nap, & then bring wine & a snack to S9?
I do also have to note bassist/singer/diva Esperanza Spalding at the Carolina Theatre Wednesday night, doing her Emily's D+Evolution show. I like her but find her over the top at times.
