Though there's enough locavore jazz Friday night to choose among, I just found out the Durham Jazz Messengers are playing at Sharp Nine Friday 8pm. I have enjoyed every youth jazz group I've heard around here, so it's worth a flyer...

I'm no longer waiting for Al Strong's (busy) March schedule; he's now got a link to it on his homepage, corrected on LJ page one....Ernest Turner's website is in Can't Be Displayed Land; I have to ask him what's what...
Locavore jazz this week is pretty normal: check the venues/performers links & makes yer cherces. The big event is the Art of Cool Festival free happy hour kick-off at the bar in the downtown Durham Marriott 5:30-7:30p Thursday 3/12. There will be food, drink, live music, tickets, info, & advice about choices. Take advantage of our jazziest local music fest. Extravore Jazz to check out: amazing violinist Regina Carter at NCSU Centerstage 3/20-21. Because larger facilities are still being renovated, she appears at the more intimate Titmus Theater at three different times. The link is on page one. More evidence of the quality of local straight-ahead jazz: guitarist Keith Ganz & trumpeter Al Strong at Sharp Nine last night. And, I'm happy with what seem to be ever-growing audiences there. Good musicians & great sound & avid listeners add up... OK, I can't wait for Al Strong & Ernest Turner to update their websites (though the C Grace website helps with Al's Raleigh gigs). It's time for this week(end)'s recommendations:
--If you want some vocal jazz--a local rarity--go hear Noah Powell at the Beyu Friday night at 8 & 10. --If you want heavy improvisation, hear the Triangle Improv Group at the Shed at 8 Friday. --If you want funky jazz, hear Al Strong's quartet at Cuban Revolution Friday at 9:30. --If you want good jazz guitar, hear Keith Ganz's quartet (incl Al S) Saturday night at 8 at Sharp Nine. I'll be at the last. The rest will depend on how much energy I have left this week. |
