Pianist & UNC professor Stephen Anderson is conducting a once a month Tuesday evening at 7p History Of Jazz class at Sharp Nine, starting 1/19/16. Having seen Stephen teach often, I highly recommend it, so highly that I've already booked a place 1/19.

I'm back after a good holiday break, which included hearing saxist Wayne Escoffery at The 9th Note in Stamford CT. Even more exciting was hearing the Ryan Hanseler Quintet at the Beyu last night, having not heard Ryan since he moved to Amsterdam last year. He, trumpeter Al Strong, saxist Brian Miller, drummer Kobie Watkins, & bassist Jason Foureman swung...
Locavore jazz will start percolating in this first full week of 2016, the highlight being the "Lovestrong Vol 1" CD release by Al Strong Friday night 8 & 10p at the Beyu. That will definitely a party, I assume with most of the many musicians who played on the CD. That night you could also try this triple: Ernest Turner playing at the Parizade Restaurant in Durham at 6:30, singer/pianist Ariel Pocock at Sharp Nine at 8, & then to Al Strong's second set. I am giddily considering that for myself. I will also consider another combo Saturday night: young pianist Thomas Linger at Sharp Nine at 8p, followed by Noah Sager's second set at the Beyu (mostly to hear fine saxist Keenan McKenzie). Or, I may be resting after my Friday night exertions. Looking ahead for Extravore Jazz, I recommend the Rez Abbasi Quartet at Duke 1/22, if for no other reason than saxist Rudresh Mahantappa & pianist Vijay Iyer join him in South Asian-fused jazz. Mahantappa along is worth the price of admission. As much fun as I had for the holidays, I'm very happy to be back. Good local jazz will keep on coming! |
