Monday: Pianist Ernest Turner has chosen an interesting venue to combine with Detroit-based singer Michael Hanna (the son of fine pianist Sir Roland Hanna)--Local 506 on W. Franklin St. in Chapel Hill 8p. I plan to be here because (i) Ernest is always worth hearing & (ii) there's a rumor of possible recording by these two....Or you can catch Grewen & Griffin at Imbibe 7p, mixing standards & Griffanzo smart-ass jazz.
Tuesday:
- Sharp Nine launches February's "Big Band Tuesday" with the Triangle Jazz Orchestra 8p.
- Pianist Allison Weiner has her weekly duo at the Eddy Pub 6:30p in Saxapahaw.
- The Second Line Stompers (Gregg Gelb's Dixielandish band) plays at C Grace 9p.
Wednesday:
- 2nd Wind presents the weekly gig of Yeaux Katz, Carrboro's best jazz bar band 7p.
- The Empress Room has vocalist Amy Hancock (from Tin Tuxedo) 7:30p.
- C Grace has Tin Tuxedo pianist Court Stewart solo 9p.
- Jazz At the Mary Lou continues its spring semester jam session--aka the Oldest Jam Session In Durham--9:30p in Mary Lou Williams Center next to Page Auditorium next to Duke Chapel. Starts & finishes late but fills you full of local jazz.
Thursday:
- Ernest Turner leads the Imbibe jazz jam 8p
- C Grace has the City Market Jazz band 9p.
- The Empress Room has bassist Rick Wolff 7:30p.
- Raleigh's Vinos Finos has vocalist/pianist Lydia Salett Dudley 6:30p.
- Trombonist Danny Grewen continues his residency at Durham's Arcana with Yeaux Katz & Foster Wiley 8p.
- John Brown presents the Duke Jazz Band with saxist Tim Warfield in Baldwin Auditorium 8p.
- Sharp Nine has the Sam King Directions Band 8p. I'll be there because I want to hear these kids play.
- Durham's Blue Note Grill features Tea Cup Gin 9p.
- C Grace has the Jim Ferris Trio 9p.
- The Empress Room has pianist Fred Westbrook 9p.
- Irregardless has the Doug Largent Trio 6:30p.
- Sharp Nine presents vocalist Angela Bingham with guitarist Scott Sawyer 8p.
- Apex's Halle Cultural Center has pianist Lenore Raphael & special guests 7:30p.
- C Grace has the Al Strong Quartet 9p.
- The Empress Room has pianist Tony Thompson 9p.
- Irregardless has Sidecar Social Club 9p
- The Duke, UNC, & NCCU big bands to their annual Valentines concert at Baldwin Auditorium 2p. I'll be there because it's great to hear those student musicians.
- The Durham Symphony Orchestra presents a tribute to Langston Hughes & Ella Fitzgerald--including Al Strong, Gregg Gelb, vocalist Yolanda Rabun, & other local jazz musicians--at Durham's Hayti Center 4p. I guess I'll have to call Uber to go from Duke to Hayti!
