SECOND: The NCCU Jazz Studies benefit concert, "Keep The Vision Alive II" is 11/6 at the Carolina Theatre 6p, featuring pianist Ellis Marsalis & saxophonist Marcus Anderson plus the NCCU Big Band. Not only a good cause, but terrific, terrific music!
FIRST: Pianist Joey Calderazzo & bassist Eric Revis play at the Beyu Friday night 8 & 10p. Another not-to-be-missed gig. A long-time member of the Branford Marsalis Quartet, Calderazzo is a local resident, with a local band as well (playing at Ruggero Piano 9/23), with Revis his long-time peer in the BMQ.

Last year's NCCU Jazz Studies benefit concert was electric. This year's will have the same wattage: https://www.weebly.com/editor/main.php. As you can see it features pianist Ellis Marsalis & saxist Marcus Anderson.
If you need to know more about Ellis Marsalis (other than his fathering America's great jazz family) listen to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdXp2fFC3wU. His touch is incredible. Makes me want to rent a piano & ask him to play at my house... If you need to know more about Marcus Anderson--https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdJbrgGCPvg--& enjoy dancing... The big news for this week is that the Beyu managed to book extravore/locavore pianist Joey Calderazzo & his Branford Marsalis Quartet compatriot, bassist Eric Revis, for Friday night at 8 & 10p. The price is good & the music will be world class. It's also good that Calderazzo is playing more locally--including a 9/23 gig at Ruggero Piano in Raleigh with his NC quartet...
For those not considering the Calderazzo-Revis gig, there's plenty else on Friday: the Jim Ketch Swingtet at Sharp Nine 8p, a mix of the elder Ketch & young sidemen; the Gregg Gelb Quartet debuts a new CD at C Grace at 9p; Al Strong does his duo thing at Alley 26 9p; & pianist/singer Ariel Pocock & bassist James Suter are one of the best listening spots, Brasa Brazilian Steak House, 6:30p. I'll take in the first Swingtet set at Sharp Nine & then amble over to Calderazzo-Revis's second set at the Beyu. If I was well & truly giddy & desperate for jazz, I'd go from Brasa to Sharp Nine to the Beyu to Alley 26--& then book an Uber driver to drag me home! Saturday: The latest 2p session at the Station in Carrboro is led by bassist Freeman Ledbetter (who played often with Yusuf Salim) joined by fine young pianist Andrew Berinson, another blend of elder & younger. I'll be there, after which I'll nap so I can...See guitarist Scott Sawter at Sharp Nine, featuring his favorite tenor saxist, Dave Finucane. Sunday: Last Sunday I was again enchanted by guitarist Brad Maiani, bassist Jason Foureman, & drummer Dan Davis at the West End Wine Bar 7-9p. It's good enough to make this a habit next Sunday & Sundays beyond. P. S. I've added Carrboro's 2nd Wind bar to venue links, with the Yeaux Katz quartet every Wednesday 7-9p, led by trombonist Danny Grewen, abetted by two Red Clay Ramblers. Another jazz choice here... |
