Continuing this week's magical music tour, I heard drummer Atticus Reynolds's "Bu Project" quintet at the Shed last night, five local university students playing compositions by members of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (Blakey being "Bu"). I planned to stay only for the first set (to save my energy for this week's music tour) but stayed on because they were worth hearing more of. That mostly meant hearing more of Andrew Berinson's enthusiastic piano & Shquim Muldrow's warm, thoughtful tenor playing. Their solos made me want to listen.
Peter Burke has liked jazz since he was in high school. Having lived & worked in exotic places with & without local jazz scenes, he has also led a Guide To Local Jazz class in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Duke.
