I'm going to the UNC Jazz Fest's student jazz combos performance at 4p in the Kenan Music Building this afternoon. Guest artists trumpeter Etienne Charles & bassist Rodney Whitaker will join them. Then, at 7p in Gerrard Hall (next to Memorial Hall, where the Brian Blade Fellowship will play at 8), UNC jazz professor & fine drummer Dan Davis will give a history of the drum set. What we see today is nowhere near what jazz drums looked like a century ago, so that should be interesting.
If I wasn't going 'extravore' with the Ronald K. Brown dance troupe/Jason Moran & the Bandwagon trio combo at Duke (worth it in its own way to see an improvising jazz trio works with Brown's choreography), I would go directly to the Beyu at 8 to see another brave combo: spoken word performers will pay tribute to Gil Scott Heron & Oscar Brown Jr. It will be a unique event. I'd be thrilled if someone taped it & dropped it on YouTube.
