Looking ahead, I'm planning to go extravore tomorrow night at the Carrboro Arts Center, listening to downtown NYC guitarist Nels Cline while watching painter Norton Wisdom create--joint improv!
There's too much going on (reprise) this extended weekend:
Thursday: saxophonist Aaron Hill at the Beyu
Friday: young trumpeter Lynn Grissett at the Beyu; the Gregg Gelb Quartet at C Grace; Doug Largent at the Honysuckle Tea House in Chapel Hill (google the HTH for details); Al Strong at Cuban Revolution; & "3 UNC Saxes" at Sharp Nine (i.e., give youth a chance).
Saturday: the John Brown Big Band with singer Lois Deloatch at the Kirby Theater in Roxboro; soul jazz singer Yolanda Rabun at the Beyu; the Al Strong Quartet at C Grace; & the La Fiesta Jazz Quintet at Sharp Nine.
Sunday: free jazz featuring John Zorn's composition "Cobra" (a worthwhile listening challenge).
Yeah, too many choices! I'm leaning toward Lynn G Friday & La Fiesta Saturday, but don't let me influence you too much. We obviously have lots to choose among!
