1. Keenan McKenzie is such a talented musician: Most local jazz fans should know Keenan as a NCJRO alto player, but he's also an in-demand national swing dance player--& composer. Tuesday night at Motorco his big band played both popular Christmas carols & tunes from his new "Bull City Christmas". The latter is full of completely original songs, sung by a variety of local vocalists & performed oy more than 30 local musicians. Fun music to listen to, visions of swing dancers in one's head.
2. You have a chance of seeing him again this week (swing dancers included): See This Week Tuesday...
This Week:
Tuesday
- Keenan McKenzie brings his Riffers septet to Vecino's in Carrboro 8p. I will be dazed by the swing dancing!
- Vocalist Amy Hancock inhabits the Empress Room 7:30p. Perhaps the best local interpreter of well- & lesser-known standards.
- Al Strong's jazz jam returns to the Durham Hotel roof for its monthly gig 7p. The ceiling heaters there are marvelous!
- Angela Bingham's quartet (including guitarist Scott Sawyer) at Sharp Nine 8p. I'll again take in this effervescent performance.
- Al Strong at C Grace 9p.
- Vibes player Steve Hobbs at the Empress Room 9p.
- The City Lights Trio at Irregardless 9p.
