1. Le'Andre McPhatter: This pianist has, for me, kept her light under a bushel basked, but her light shone at Sharp Nine Friday night. She graduates from NCCU in December & then plans to teach music in Japan for a while. Her life will be as adventurous as her playing.
2. Lydia Sallet Dudley: This pianist & singer also shone Friday night. If I could open a jazz bar, I'd make her the house performer.
3. Jazz At Lincoln Center Online: JALC regularly broadcasts live peformances online. This Friday at 7p it presents the 15th anniversary of extravore pianist Fred Hersch's "Leaves of Grass" featuring singer Kurt Elling & our Kate McGarry. And, this is only one of many live peformances to watch.
This Week:
Tuesday: The Ernest Turner Trio is at the Durham Hotel 6-9p. On the roof, I believe.
Wednesday: For you night owls, the Jazz At the Mary Lou starts at Duke 9:30p, the oldest continuing jazz jam in the area. Thanks, John Brown.
Friday: The somewhat reconstituted Zen Poets are at Sharp Nine 8p, still with the core of saxophonist Annalise Stalls & bassist Aaron Gross, & guitarist Gabe Desereau & drummer Dan Faust added. Having just calculated, I can still make the second set after I watch the "Leaves of Grass". Yahoo!
Saturday: Though it's already sold out, Lois Deloatch Gomes sings with the Ernest Turner Trio 8p, having deducted one day from her work week to devote to performing. Yahoo to Lois! For those without those tickets, you can go to Yeaux Katz (Carrboro's Best Jazz Bar Band) at the Station 2p, or the Al Strong Quartet at C Grace 9p.
