After a relatively quiet weekend--except perhaps at the Ocean City Jazz Festival--local jazz reawakes as people return. As seems normal, Friday is the hardest night to choose where to go, or how many places to go!
Yup, we have the usual suspects: Al Strong at Alley 26, Brian Horton with Ernest Turner on piano at the Beyu, Doug Largent at the CH West End Wine Bar, & others you can find on WNCU's jazz calendar. But, at Sharp Nine there's the young pianist Elijah Fox-Peck, who's studying at the Oberlin Conservatory & assumedly making the most of his summer break here. Based on his YouTube he's worth a flyer. Plus, boys & girls, part of our job is encouragement!
Then there's Saturday: Mint Julep will make things swing at the Beyu; the Stephen Anderson trio lights up the Brasa Steakhouse bar; Al Strong is at C Grace; & a singer I have yet to hear, Angela Bingham, is at the venue I have yet to visit, Unwined in Cary.
Looking farther ahead, I just found out about the Pinehurst Jazz Festival from Ernest Turner, who is among the many local players performing at the Pinehurst Resort Sat-Sun 7/19-20. Check it out online & cach
