...there's fire, right? Well, if this version of the La Fiesta Jazz Band--Gregg Gelb on reeds, Stephen Anderson on piano, Andy Kleinschmidt on electric bass, Nelson Delgado on congas & singing, & Ramon Ortiz on percussion--was smokin' at Sharp Nine last night, they should be renamed the El Fuego Latin Jazz Band! They covered old & very new Latin jazz (including a completely new Stephen A monster piece) & kept our medium-sized audience chair-dancing & bouncing through two 45-minute sets.

We finished our Guide To Local Jazz class yesterday with Kate McGarry & Keith Ganz performing & talking. I have been spoiled leading that class...
Looking ahead, I'm planning to go extravore tomorrow night at the Carrboro Arts Center, listening to downtown NYC guitarist Nels Cline while watching painter Norton Wisdom create--joint improv! There's too much going on (reprise) this extended weekend: Thursday: saxophonist Aaron Hill at the Beyu Friday: young trumpeter Lynn Grissett at the Beyu; the Gregg Gelb Quartet at C Grace; Doug Largent at the Honysuckle Tea House in Chapel Hill (google the HTH for details); Al Strong at Cuban Revolution; & "3 UNC Saxes" at Sharp Nine (i.e., give youth a chance). Saturday: the John Brown Big Band with singer Lois Deloatch at the Kirby Theater in Roxboro; soul jazz singer Yolanda Rabun at the Beyu; the Al Strong Quartet at C Grace; & the La Fiesta Jazz Quintet at Sharp Nine. Sunday: free jazz featuring John Zorn's composition "Cobra" (a worthwhile listening challenge). Yeah, too many choices! I'm leaning toward Lynn G Friday & La Fiesta Saturday, but don't let me influence you too much. We obviously have lots to choose among! Dang, Ernest Turner is a fine pianist. I got to the Shed last night for the first time in weeks & heard some lovely, intricate piano, abetted by Jason Foureman on bass & the ebullient Kobie Watkins on drums. The Shed only asks a $5 donation; cheap at four times the price...
