1. Best performance last week with sparse attendance: At Sharp Nine pianist Stephen Anderson & vibraphonist Juan Alamo played the Gary Burton/Chic Corea songbook marvelously, only forgetting to advertise that. Whenever they play a duo again, be sure to be there because they're worth it!
2. Best sell-out performance last week: At Sharp Nine Saturday Thrio--pianist Andrew Berinson, drummer Donovan Cheatham, & bassist Kevin Beardsley--were joined by their older jazz-brother--alto/tenor saxist Brian Miller--for equally marvelous if totally different quartet music. The highlight for me was Brian's deft touch with ballads. For the audience it was grooving on long solos & demanding an encore. As S9 vol Jen Lord put it, they were "acrobatic."
