There are virtues to being housebound; it gave me time to track down music & musicians I've read about or other wise stumbled across lately. Which leads to this injunction: do not pass Go, do not collect $200, go straight to www.benwendel.com. There you will find videos of saxist/oboeist Wendell dueting with selected partners once a month over the course of last year. It is as beautiful a set of recordings as you can hear. I can't recommend it too highly.

This will be a good week, the highlights of which I've already noted previously:
--Stephen Anderson starts his "History of Jazz" class at Sharp Nine Tuesday at 7p. I'll be there. --Duke Performances has guitarist Rez Abbasi both talking & playing in a jam session with local musicians at the Shed Thursday night at 7p. Getting a fine extravore musician to do that is a credit to Duke Performances, even with their history of pre-concert events. --Abbasi then plays with his Invocation quintet Friday night at 8p at Duke, including alto saxist Rudresh Mahantappa & pianist Vijay Iyer. A great complement to Thursday night's jam session. And, if none of those suit your taste or time, there's plenty of regular gigs: Doug Largent at the Looking Glass Tuesday evening; Baron Tymas at the Beyu Thursday night; the Mint Julep (swing) Jazz Band at Beyu Friday night; drummer Larry Q. Draughan channeling Max Roach at Sharp Nine Saturday night; & the busy Al Strong at C Grace that night too. Too many choices? I'm almost getting used to it... The Empress Room in the South Glenwood restaurant business area now has a regular jazz schedule on their website. Though they don't list starting times, the Eric Hirsh website listing for his gig Saturday night with singer Jo Gore says 9:30p. Since it's a cocktail bar like its downstairs C Grace neighbor, I wouldn't be surprised that's not Standard Time for the Empress Room. I'll try to find out more...
