Monday: At 7p the Art of Cool unveils its April festival lineup at the Beyu. I'll be there because I'm curious about which young, up-&-coming jazz players who don't necessarily play straigh-ahead jazz will appear. The AOC Fest is a glimpse of the one future of jazz, one which combines with other contemporary music.
Tuesday: A night when I could stop at the Durham Hotel at 6p before heading to the NCCU Jazz Studies student jazz combos at 7p at BN Duke Auditorium.
Wednesday: If I didn't have an unavoidable meeting I'd be at the NCCU vocal jazz combos at BN Duke at 7p. That's a chance for you to hear individual voices from the Vocal Jazz Ensemble.
Thursday: I'll check out pianist Andrew Berinson at the Shed 8p (reprise), hoping to hear more of his original compositions.
Friday: Among many choices (check Home page venue links), I'll catch singer Jua at the Shed, having not heard him in much too long.
Saturday: If I have energy left I'll check out extravore singer Emily Braden at Sharp Nine 8p. Check her out on You Tube to see if she's your cup of tea.
Sunday: The Beast is on the rooftop of the Durham Hotel 5:30p, smooth-voiced Tim Smith subbing for Pierce Freelon, probably meaning plenty of funk but less hip-hop. But, who knows...
