Ariel Pocock has that challenge based on what I heard & saw last night. She & bassist James Suter were a nice change of pace after listening to many heavier pianists & jazz groups, & offer a glimpse into an interesting future. Whatever directions she goes in, it'll be fun to see.
Where do you go when you have a light piano touch like Bill Charlap, can tune your developing jazz voice into Norah Jones wavelength at times, & look like a young Jodi Foster? She also wore the funkiest netted, glittery heels in the room.

Since it's Thursday, quick weekend recommendations:
--Soul/jazz vocalist Akua Allrich at Beyu Friday 8 & 10p. Check her out on YouTube. --Primera Jazz reunion at Cuban Revolution 9:30p. Pianist Eric Hirsh has promised me mucho progressive Latin music with him, percussionist Brevan Hampden, trumpeter Al Strong, drummer Stephen Coffman, & bassist Pete Kimosh. These guys played together a few years ago & Brevan's visit = Reunion! --Vocalist/pianist Ariel Pocock w/ bassist James Suter. Check her out on YouTube as I've done & you'll see why she's put out her first CD with first-class NYC instrumentalists. Otherwise, the UNC jazz program has numerous events tomorrow & Saturday, well worth taking in. Or, you can check other venues & find your favorite! P.S. There is a LOT going on next week, which I'll alert you to soon... Please keep this date in mind: Sunday 11/22. Here's the basic info:
Save the date: Sunday, November 22nd, 2015 6 pm, "Keep the Vision Alive" NCCU Jazz Benefit: NCCU Jazz Studies presents Branford Marsalis, Joey Calderazzo. Also appearing: The NCCU Jazz Ensemble & NCCU Vocal Jazz Ensemble Tickets go on sale: October 13, 2015 Carolina Theatre, 308 West Morgan Street, Durham, NC 27701 (919) 560-303 The ticket range is $50-250. Yup, that's steep for some folks, but the proceeds provide greater scholarship & recruiting travel support to the biggest university jazz program in our area. If that's too much for you, please do consider a straight donation to the NCCU Jazz Program. I'll send out more info as we get closer to the event... |
